Dog Soldiers (2002)
Directed by: Neil Marshall
Tagline: Six Soldiers. Full Moon. No Chance
A couple out on a romantic camping trip are suddenly and viciously attacked by an unseen foe. Isn't this how a lot of horror movies start out? Someone is being chased or watched or stalked and then all of a sudden attacked! Cut to opening credits. Dog Soldiers is no exception. Anyway, this movie starts out with a small group of military trainees, led by Sgt. Harry G. Wells(Sean Pertwee- Mutant Chronicles, Botched, Wilderness ) and Pvt. Cooper (Kevin McKidd- Hannibal Rising ), in the Scottish foothills, running an exercise against a team of special ops soldiers to see who comes out on top. Everything is all fine and dandy until one night, while sitting around the fire at their makeshift base camp, a dead animal flies out of nowhere and lands square on their campfire. Chaos ensues and the next morning, after all nerves are settled, the group of trainees decides to track down where this dead beast came from. They stumble upon the special ops base camp and are horrified at what they find. Blood and intestines are smeared all over everything. The only survivor is Capt. Ryan who has a we'll say bad history with Pvt. Cooper. They gather up Capt. Ryan and any guns and ammo they can find and vacate the premises. The squad finds themselves being chased by what looks like wolf-men. They happen across a woman driving down a road in the middle of the woods who claims she heard gunfire and came out to investigate. They hop in her conveniently sized vehicle and make a break for a close by cabin. They reach the cabin and proceed to board up all the windows and doors. All throughout the following night, the squad is attacked by the wolf-beasts and are forced to improvise once they run low on ammunition. This all builds up to one hell of an ending fight scene full of blood, explosions, and plot twists.
Dog Soldiers is a great movie. Call me biased because I'm a huge fan of werewolves but this film has it all. Action, great gorey money shots, witty dialogue, and awesome storytelling. My really only big complaint would be i feel that Kevin McKidd was miscast as the hero. He's not really that big of a bad ass in my eyes. Lack of badassness aside, I love this movie. It has always been one of my favorites and i was so excited when it came in the mail from Netflix. This is one movie I definitely don't mind watching multiple times. If you're one of the many slackers out there who hasn't seen Dog Soldiers, do yourself a favor and go pick it up. Amazon.com has the epic steel package edition for $9.99. I'm going to. This is one film I've been meaning to add to my collection for a long time. Dog Soldiers gets a 4.5/5.
