Mondays....

It's the week before christmas! Need more last minute gifts/stocking stuffers for those horror aficionados? Here are tomorrow's DVD new releases:

The Devil's Music (2008) - The Devil's Music is the first film to document the strange story of notorious shock-rocker Erika Spawn who was briefly the most infamous woman in the world after her music had been linked by the tabloid press to real-life murders and atrocities. Through recently obtained footage, we see how Erika became attached to a young fan, Stef Regan, who accompanied her on the final music tour with horrifying and bloody consequences. We also witness how Erika became obsessed with former boy-band singer Robin Harris, an obsession that led to a series of violent incidents and bizarre accusations. With unprecedented access to all of those who were involved, this film cuts through the rumors and media spin to uncover the disturbing truth behind a creepy, violent and still controversial chapter in pop music.

A Four Course Meal - An ancient demon hides out in a death row prison, feeding on the condemned men who will not be missed. In a fairy-tale vision of Russia, a brutish Ogre becomes the guardian of orphaned children destined to be devoured by a trio of ghostly women living deep in the woods. A lowley data-entry clerk finds his job threatened by his company's new affirmative action policy. One that attempts to properly incorporate the workforce's new members. The Living Dead! Death may be the end, but its also a great way to get promoted. These are simply the main dishes that make up A Four Course Meal, a horror-comedy-anthology about the tasty nature of cannibalism.

District 9 (2009) - From producer Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings Trilogy) and director Neill Blomkamp comes a startlingly original science fiction thriller that "soars on the imagination of its creators" (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone). With stunning special effects and gritty realism, the film plunges us into a world where the aliens have landed... only to be exiled to a slum on the fringes of Johannesburg. Now, one lone human discovers the mysterious secret of the extraterrestrial weapon technology. Hunted and hounded through the bizarre back alleys of an alien shantytown, he will discover what it means to be the ultimate outsider on your own planet.

Flowers in the Attic (1987) - After a tragic accident leaves them fatherless, four children return to their mother's mysterious family mansion hoping for an inheritance. But when they are imprisoned and abandoned by their evil grandmother, the children must survive a nightmare of brutal cruelty, forbidden passion and a final shocking discovery that will shatter their innocence forever.

Ghost Machine (2009) - A group of young U.S. military techs borrow a top-secret combat simulator for a weekend of unauthorized gaming. But when they set up the system inside an abandoned prison used for the torture of post-9/11 prisoners, they discover that someone – or something – has uploaded itself into their A.I. software. A deadly new player has now joined the game: How do you survive the final level of lock-and-load virtual reality when escape is impossible, slaughter is uncontrollable and the enemy is unstoppable? The ultimate battle begins inside the GHOST MACHINE.

Captive (1998) - Grief stricken over the brutal murder of her wealthy husband, Samantha Hoffman checks into the posh Dienel Clinic to recuperate. Her “rest” quickly turns into a nightmare when she realizes her husband’s death was just the beginning

Paranormal Entity (2009) - The Asylum's newest attempt at ripping off people who don't know any better.

I'm definitely excited to check out District 9. I hope you all have a great holiday! Keep it bloody!

I Wish I Had Singing Mannequins......

Tourist Trap (1979)

Directed By: David Schmoeller

Tagline: Every year young people disappear

A Couple are on a roadtrip to somewhere. They get a flat tire and realize their spare doesn't have any air in it. The husband hoofs it to the nearest gas station and gets killed in a strange and mysterious way. Back at the broken down car, the lone female's friends come to the rescue and begin a search for the missing husband. The group drives around in the "rescue jeep" and comb the countryside looking for the wandering hubby . They stumble upon an old, abandoned tourist trap in the middle of nowhere called "Slausen's Museum" and the old man living there. He seems like a normal man but he is hiding a dangerous family secret. One by one the teenagers start to go missing and end up playing dolly with a maniacal pschic killer. What is the mystery behind the Slausen family and will the teens make it out alive?

I blind bought this DVD because i'm a huge fan of David Schmoeller and Charles Band and their work with the puppet master series. I wanted to see what some of their earlier work was like. I wasn't too let down. 'Tourist Trap' is and isn't your typical slasher movie. It has the group of sexy co-eds, an old man giving warnings, and an innocent looking leading lady. There were no boobs however, even though Tanya Roberts was wearing THE skimpiest top ever. Just take it off girl, jeez. Another complaint i have is the killer looked dumb. For a guy who prides himself on his wax museum art, he has one or two or three shitty masks. Take the time in your secluded hillbilly life and make a sweet looking mask. Also, there was virtually NO blood. I guess it didn't really need it but it would have been nice to see some of the good old red stuff to make up for some of the boring drawn out parts. Oh well. What it lacks in the make-up department it makes up for in the creepiness department. Everything from the wax museum to the mannequins piled in the abandoned Slausen house helped to create a very eerie atmosphere. 'Tourist Trap' is by no means a masterpiece. It is, however, a fun, campy little feature and a great early effort by an excellent director/writer. This one is definitely worth the rent. 'Tourist Trap' gets a 6/10.

Stay Out of the Sun!

Eskalofrío aka Shiver (2008)

Directed By: Isidro Ortiz

Written By: Hernan Migoya and Jose Gamo

Teenage boy Santi has a skin disorder where he is extremely sensitive to sunlight. This forces him and his single mother to live their lives on opposite schedules than normal families. Santi goes to night school and doesn't have very many friends. Him and his mother decide to move to a small town in the mountains where the sun doesn't shine for long periods of time and the town is shaded by the mountains. Santi meets a super cute girl named Angela and they become quick friends. When a series of murders happen all after Santi and his mother arrive in town, the townsfolk begin to suspect the newcomers to the village have a secret they are hiding. The truth is, the village and the house Santi and his mother moved into are harboring a secret. A terrible secret that will rock the foundation of the village and test the bond between mother and son.

'Shiver', form the producers of the extremely well done 'Pan's Labrynth', starts out as a very dark and brooding movie. Somewhere along the way it starts to get a little cheesy. Don't get me wrong, I love cheesy movies but for a movie that starts out so moody, cheesy is not the way to go. Everything from some acting to the musical score to some of the blood effects start to get a little laughable. It kind of dissappointed me; not enough to turn me away though. Also, it's not a very original story. It takes from many different stories and puts them together. That being said, it was executed very well. The camera work was great and there were some very tense and heartpounding moments. I'm not sure whether the director wanted the creature reveal to be a twist or not but it didn't work out. I would definitely take the time to 'Shiver' if you haven't already. This one is not to be missed. Some of you will probably end up with a new crush on actress Blanca Suarez. It's available to stream instantly on Netflix so take advantage if you have it. If you dig foreign movies and urban legend type stories then you will definitely love 'Shiver'. Tension, mystery, and cute spanish girls give 'Shiver' an 8/10.

For Mother Russia!

Orphan (2009)

Directed By: Jaume Collet-Serra

Tagline: Can You Keep A Secret?

A family's foundation is rocked when the baby they are expecting dies in the womb. Distraught, the family decides to adopt a child, hoping to give the love they were prepared to share with their dead child to a child who is in need of it. They think they find the perfect child at a local orphanage. Esther is smart, kind, and very charming. Once she gets taken home, she immediately seems very different from other children. When a series of accidents begin, and Esther is always around when they happen, Esther's adoptive mother begins to dig into Esther's past. What she finds is a secret Esther has been hiding for years; A secret that Esther will do anything to keep hidden.

'Orphan' is one of those movies that will have you looking over at whoever you are watching it with saying "That's fucked up". Esther is one evil bitch. She hurts, manipulates, threatens, and even kills without ever thinking twice about it. She befriends instantly befriends her new little sister, Max, who is very young, impressionable, and deaf, making her an easy target. Esther forces Max to help her carry out evil deeds and threatens harm to Max and her family if she doesn't keep quiet. Vera Farmiga (Quid Pro Quo, Running Scared) plays a MILF, Kate, who has had her share of tragedies in the past. Weird things begin to happen while Esther is around, so Kate digs deep into Esther's past. What she finds is supposed to be the big twist that everyone has been talking about. It was just meh. I'm just glad it wasn't some supernatural cop out. If you know me, you know I hate CGI blood and gore. There was a little bit in this film but not enough to turn me off completely to the experience. Another thing that bugged me is that Esther's Russian accent seemed to get thicker and thicker as the movie went on? Was this intentionally done by the director or is this just inexperience on the young actresses part? Who knows. Overall, there was solid acting, great writing, some pretty tense moments, and a great climax to a pretty good movie. 'Orphan' gets a 7.5/10.
