Mondays....

It's the week before christmas! Need more last minute gifts/stocking stuffers for those horror aficionados? Here are tomorrow's DVD new releases:

The Devil's Music (2008) - The Devil's Music is the first film to document the strange story of notorious shock-rocker Erika Spawn who was briefly the most infamous woman in the world after her music had been linked by the tabloid press to real-life murders and atrocities. Through recently obtained footage, we see how Erika became attached to a young fan, Stef Regan, who accompanied her on the final music tour with horrifying and bloody consequences. We also witness how Erika became obsessed with former boy-band singer Robin Harris, an obsession that led to a series of violent incidents and bizarre accusations. With unprecedented access to all of those who were involved, this film cuts through the rumors and media spin to uncover the disturbing truth behind a creepy, violent and still controversial chapter in pop music.

A Four Course Meal - An ancient demon hides out in a death row prison, feeding on the condemned men who will not be missed. In a fairy-tale vision of Russia, a brutish Ogre becomes the guardian of orphaned children destined to be devoured by a trio of ghostly women living deep in the woods. A lowley data-entry clerk finds his job threatened by his company's new affirmative action policy. One that attempts to properly incorporate the workforce's new members. The Living Dead! Death may be the end, but its also a great way to get promoted. These are simply the main dishes that make up A Four Course Meal, a horror-comedy-anthology about the tasty nature of cannibalism.

District 9 (2009) - From producer Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings Trilogy) and director Neill Blomkamp comes a startlingly original science fiction thriller that "soars on the imagination of its creators" (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone). With stunning special effects and gritty realism, the film plunges us into a world where the aliens have landed... only to be exiled to a slum on the fringes of Johannesburg. Now, one lone human discovers the mysterious secret of the extraterrestrial weapon technology. Hunted and hounded through the bizarre back alleys of an alien shantytown, he will discover what it means to be the ultimate outsider on your own planet.

Flowers in the Attic (1987) - After a tragic accident leaves them fatherless, four children return to their mother's mysterious family mansion hoping for an inheritance. But when they are imprisoned and abandoned by their evil grandmother, the children must survive a nightmare of brutal cruelty, forbidden passion and a final shocking discovery that will shatter their innocence forever.

Ghost Machine (2009) - A group of young U.S. military techs borrow a top-secret combat simulator for a weekend of unauthorized gaming. But when they set up the system inside an abandoned prison used for the torture of post-9/11 prisoners, they discover that someone – or something – has uploaded itself into their A.I. software. A deadly new player has now joined the game: How do you survive the final level of lock-and-load virtual reality when escape is impossible, slaughter is uncontrollable and the enemy is unstoppable? The ultimate battle begins inside the GHOST MACHINE.

Captive (1998) - Grief stricken over the brutal murder of her wealthy husband, Samantha Hoffman checks into the posh Dienel Clinic to recuperate. Her “rest” quickly turns into a nightmare when she realizes her husband’s death was just the beginning

Paranormal Entity (2009) - The Asylum's newest attempt at ripping off people who don't know any better.

I'm definitely excited to check out District 9. I hope you all have a great holiday! Keep it bloody!

Last week's answer: Audition

Name this famous 'Phantasm' creep:

I Wish I Had Singing Mannequins......

Tourist Trap (1979)

Directed By: David Schmoeller

Tagline: Every year young people disappear

A Couple are on a roadtrip to somewhere. They get a flat tire and realize their spare doesn't have any air in it. The husband hoofs it to the nearest gas station and gets killed in a strange and mysterious way. Back at the broken down car, the lone female's friends come to the rescue and begin a search for the missing husband. The group drives around in the "rescue jeep" and comb the countryside looking for the wandering hubby . They stumble upon an old, abandoned tourist trap in the middle of nowhere called "Slausen's Museum" and the old man living there. He seems like a normal man but he is hiding a dangerous family secret. One by one the teenagers start to go missing and end up playing dolly with a maniacal pschic killer. What is the mystery behind the Slausen family and will the teens make it out alive?

I blind bought this DVD because i'm a huge fan of David Schmoeller and Charles Band and their work with the puppet master series. I wanted to see what some of their earlier work was like. I wasn't too let down. 'Tourist Trap' is and isn't your typical slasher movie. It has the group of sexy co-eds, an old man giving warnings, and an innocent looking leading lady. There were no boobs however, even though Tanya Roberts was wearing THE skimpiest top ever. Just take it off girl, jeez. Another complaint i have is the killer looked dumb. For a guy who prides himself on his wax museum art, he has one or two or three shitty masks. Take the time in your secluded hillbilly life and make a sweet looking mask. Also, there was virtually NO blood. I guess it didn't really need it but it would have been nice to see some of the good old red stuff to make up for some of the boring drawn out parts. Oh well. What it lacks in the make-up department it makes up for in the creepiness department. Everything from the wax museum to the mannequins piled in the abandoned Slausen house helped to create a very eerie atmosphere. 'Tourist Trap' is by no means a masterpiece. It is, however, a fun, campy little feature and a great early effort by an excellent director/writer. This one is definitely worth the rent. 'Tourist Trap' gets a 6/10.

Stay Out of the Sun!

Eskalofrío aka Shiver (2008)

Directed By: Isidro Ortiz

Written By: Hernan Migoya and Jose Gamo

Teenage boy Santi has a skin disorder where he is extremely sensitive to sunlight. This forces him and his single mother to live their lives on opposite schedules than normal families. Santi goes to night school and doesn't have very many friends. Him and his mother decide to move to a small town in the mountains where the sun doesn't shine for long periods of time and the town is shaded by the mountains. Santi meets a super cute girl named Angela and they become quick friends. When a series of murders happen all after Santi and his mother arrive in town, the townsfolk begin to suspect the newcomers to the village have a secret they are hiding. The truth is, the village and the house Santi and his mother moved into are harboring a secret. A terrible secret that will rock the foundation of the village and test the bond between mother and son.

'Shiver', form the producers of the extremely well done 'Pan's Labrynth', starts out as a very dark and brooding movie. Somewhere along the way it starts to get a little cheesy. Don't get me wrong, I love cheesy movies but for a movie that starts out so moody, cheesy is not the way to go. Everything from some acting to the musical score to some of the blood effects start to get a little laughable. It kind of dissappointed me; not enough to turn me away though. Also, it's not a very original story. It takes from many different stories and puts them together. That being said, it was executed very well. The camera work was great and there were some very tense and heartpounding moments. I'm not sure whether the director wanted the creature reveal to be a twist or not but it didn't work out. I would definitely take the time to 'Shiver' if you haven't already. This one is not to be missed. Some of you will probably end up with a new crush on actress Blanca Suarez. It's available to stream instantly on Netflix so take advantage if you have it. If you dig foreign movies and urban legend type stories then you will definitely love 'Shiver'. Tension, mystery, and cute spanish girls give 'Shiver' an 8/10.

For Mother Russia!

Orphan (2009)

Directed By: Jaume Collet-Serra

Tagline: Can You Keep A Secret?

A family's foundation is rocked when the baby they are expecting dies in the womb. Distraught, the family decides to adopt a child, hoping to give the love they were prepared to share with their dead child to a child who is in need of it. They think they find the perfect child at a local orphanage. Esther is smart, kind, and very charming. Once she gets taken home, she immediately seems very different from other children. When a series of accidents begin, and Esther is always around when they happen, Esther's adoptive mother begins to dig into Esther's past. What she finds is a secret Esther has been hiding for years; A secret that Esther will do anything to keep hidden.

'Orphan' is one of those movies that will have you looking over at whoever you are watching it with saying "That's fucked up". Esther is one evil bitch. She hurts, manipulates, threatens, and even kills without ever thinking twice about it. She befriends instantly befriends her new little sister, Max, who is very young, impressionable, and deaf, making her an easy target. Esther forces Max to help her carry out evil deeds and threatens harm to Max and her family if she doesn't keep quiet. Vera Farmiga (Quid Pro Quo, Running Scared) plays a MILF, Kate, who has had her share of tragedies in the past. Weird things begin to happen while Esther is around, so Kate digs deep into Esther's past. What she finds is supposed to be the big twist that everyone has been talking about. It was just meh. I'm just glad it wasn't some supernatural cop out. If you know me, you know I hate CGI blood and gore. There was a little bit in this film but not enough to turn me off completely to the experience. Another thing that bugged me is that Esther's Russian accent seemed to get thicker and thicker as the movie went on? Was this intentionally done by the director or is this just inexperience on the young actresses part? Who knows. Overall, there was solid acting, great writing, some pretty tense moments, and a great climax to a pretty good movie. 'Orphan' gets a 7.5/10.

Her unexpected detour takes a turn for the worst when she realizes that she may know too much.

Run! Bitch Run! - In the tradition of I Spit on Your Grave and Ms. 45 comes Run! This Just In

FROM BLOODY-DISGUSTING:

It has just been announced that beautiful scream queen Danielle Harris (Halloween, Stake Land) has officially been cast as the new "Marybeth" in Adam Green's Hatchet 2, which begins lensing early next year. "She's the new Marybeth," says Green. "Everything that this movie is trying to be is to get better...case in point is that it brings fans what they want and is going to make 'Hatchet 2' even better. [There's] a new[ly designed] Victor Crowley and the whole cast is fucking amazing! To have another icon as a leading role is enormous." The sequel follows Harris as Marybeth as she escapes from the clutches of Victor Crowley, learns the truth about his curse, and heads back into the haunted New Orleans swamp to seek revenge for her family and kill Crowley once and for all."Make-up tests on Kane [Hodder] begin in about 10 days," Green says about the new Victory Crowley. "It's definitely modified, but looks the same just much more realistic and less rubber suit looking. It's a much more complicated appliance job. He's down for it though." Starring alongside Kane Hodder and Danielle Harris are Tony Todd, R.A. Mihailoff and John Carl Buechler.

So I was already pretty fucking stoked about one of my most anticipated sequels ever, but now my excitement is through the roof! Danielle Harris is an amazing actress and loves the genre as much as you and me. She's definitely going down in history as one of horror's greatest scream queens.

Muddy Feral Children

Vinyan (2008)

Directed By: Fabrice Du Welz

Written By: Fabrice Du Welz and Oliver Blackburn

'Vinyan' is the story of a middle aged couple Jeanne (Emmanuelle Beart) and Paul(Rufus Sewell) Bellmer. While in Thailand with their young son Joshua, they get caught in a monster tsunami and lose the boy in the raging water. The couple decides to stay in Thailand in hopes of being reunited with their hopefully alive son. While watching video footage of a relief effort taking place in Burma, Jeanne swears she sees her son walking away from the camera. The couple decides to venture out into the jungle to find their long lost son. They enlist the help of a shady man who later is revealed to be an underground child trafficker. What happens to the couple out in the jungles of Thailand tests their bond, their love for their son, and their overall mental state of mind.

'Vinyan is definitely one of the most slow burning movies I have ever seen. This isn't neccessarily a bad thing, but usually there has to be a big payoff at the end; a big "wow" moment. There really isn't one of those moments in this film. Aside from that the camera work was amazing. The filmmakers really took advantage of being on location and used the scenery to their advantage. The viewer is completely taken to a different world. The jungle children are extremely creepy and their total disregard for anything and anyone is very chilling. Anyways, while in the city, there are a lot of boobs. Mostly young Thai girl boobs (thank god) and no old National Geographic jungle hag boobs. Overall, 'Vinyan' is just OK. This film is definitely not for everybody. 'Vinyan' leaves you with a big WTF ending that will have you scrathching your head saying "Uhhhhh i don't get it". The whole movie is basically a journey into a mother's psyche. I was very surprised to see the lead actress getting done to her what was getting done to her in the very last scene. It kind of left me disgusted and angry at the actress, not the character she was playing. 'Vinyan' gets a 6/10.

Luc soon reveals his plans to use Jimmy as his unholy servant in a deadly and bloody game of evil revenge and power while Jimmy decends further and further into a world of sinister corruption and satanic designs.

Some great looking stuff this week. That Silent Night Deadly Night box set would make a great christmas gift for the horror fan in your life. If you are disappointed by any of these films just remember: it' most likely better than the Twilight saga.

How Many Ninja Assassins Does It Take To Kill A Ninja Assassin?

Ninja Assassin (2009)

Directed By: James McTeigue

Written By: Matthew Sand and J. Michael Straczynski

Why are you reviewing this? It's not horror, is it? Well reader let me explain. 'Ninja Assassin' is not a horror movie at all. It is most definitely a balls to the wall action movie. Why is it being reviewed on a horror website you ask? Here is my reason: 'Ninja Assassin' is THE BLOODIEST MOVIE I HAVE EVER SEEN. Yes, it is bloodier than Peter Jackson's 'Dead Alive'. This movie's biggest downfall however is its selling point. The blood and gore effects are ALL done in CGI. There are occasional props and squibs used here and there, but for the most part, it's all done with computers. If you have read any of my other reviews, you will know that CG blood is my BIGGEST pet peeve when it comes to horror films/films in general. Anyways, 'Ninja Assassin' is about a man raised by a secret ninja society who goes rogue after disobeying his leaders orders. Now, he is constantly on the run from his former ninja clan and other ninjas hired to kill him. While being on the run, he vows to protect those being hunted by his old clan in order to get closer to his former leader and rid the world of him once and for all. Basically, he is being chased while doing some of his own chasing. For the first 45 minutes of this movie, we flashback to Raizo, our ninja hero, an get a glimpse of the intense training he went through in order to become a master ninja. After the flashbacks, we are treated to one of the most balls to the wall action movie of this decade. Blades, Shurikens, and body parts fly all over the screen as Raizo fights off what seems like millions of ninjas constantly swarming him. I really wish they just used fake blood instead of using CGI, because all of the action sequences would have looked so much cooler and so much more brutal. It just became cheesy after a while. But, times is hard and CGI is easier and less time consuming. Overall, 'Ninja Assassin' was fucking awesome. The only reason why it's getting the score that it's getting is because of the excessive use of CGI blood and gore. 'Ninja Assassin' gets a 7/10.

This Just In!

FROM BLOODY-DISGUSTING.COM:

After announceing Green's return to the director's chair, we caught up with him to chat briefly about HATCHET 2, which begins lensing this coming January in Los Angeles, CA.First and foremost, Green agreed to return because Anchor Bay agreed to let him make the sequel he wants, and not a broader film. In addition, Green plans on doubling the body count. Makeup effects coordinator Robert Pendergraft (face rip kill) returns and promises a new, improved look for Victory Crowley.Horror icon Kane Hodder is confirmed to return as Victor Crowley/Mr. Crowley, with Tony Todd returning as Reverend Zombie and John Carl Buechler as Jack Cracker. A new addition to the cast is R.A. Mihailoff, who plays Leatherface in Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III.Unfortunately, Marybeth (originally played by Tamara Feldman) is being recast. "We're going in a different direction and will announce our new hero very soon as it's someone we are overjoyed to bring into our family," says Green.Cinematographer Will Barratt returns along with original producers Sarah Elbert and Cory Neal.HATCHET 2 follows Marybeth as she escapes from the clutches of Victor Crowley, learns the truth about his curse, and heads back into the haunted New Orleans swamp to seek revenge for her family and kill Victor Crowley once and for all...

Well i'm officially super fucking excited. 'Hatchet' was one of my favorite films of 2006 and when I heard that Anchor Bay was thinking about making the sequel without Adam Green and without the original crew who worked on the first film, I was pissed. Now that it's confirmed that most of the same cast and crew will be returning to the sequel, I can finally sleep easy. Mr. Crowley, bring on the gore.

After enlisting his protection in return for her eternal soul, her first act is to burn down the priest s church as he lays passed out drunk on the floor. She then flees to the city where she develops a horrible addiction to alcohol and drugs. Angela quickly spirals downward in her journal to Hell. Stripping turns to pornography and prostitution and as her deadly addictions tear her body apart, she realizes that even Satan has seemingly forsaken her.

The Witches Hammer (2006) - Rebecca is brought back from the brink of death by top secret agency Project 571. She is trained as a lethal assassin and sent on missions to kill that which she has become, a vampire. When Project 571 is destroyed by a gang of vampires, Rebecca is thrown into a quest for an ancient book powerful enough to raise the dead. Rebecca joins two priests on a journey to kill the master vampire Hugo Renoir before he can unleash the grotesque souls of the damned into our dimension. If Hugo is allowed to perform the ancient ceremony the earth shall forever pass into the realm of darkness. Along the way Rebecca must utilize her training to face Vampires, Demons and Witches all vying for the book and its awesome power.

Philosophy of a Knife (2008) - The true history of Japanese Unit 731, from its beginnings in the 1930's to its demise in 1945, and the subsequent trials in Khabarovsk, USSR, of many of the Japanese doctors from Unit 731. The facts are told, and previously unknown evidence is revealed by an eyewitness to these events, former doctor and military translator, Anatoly Protasov. Part documentary and part feature, the story is shown from the perspective of a young Japanese nurse who witnessed many of horrors, and a young Japanese officer who is torn between his sincere convictions that he is serving the greater purpose, and the deep sympathy he feels for an imprisoned Russian girl. His life is a living hell as he's compelled to carry out atrocious experiments on the other prisoners, using them as guinea pigs in this shocking tale of mankind's barbarity.

This Hollow Sacrament (2007) - Based on true events, the story revolves around the murder of four young women in Northern California in the late 1990s and the subsequent criminal investigation. The film follows the story of a tortured ex-soldier, now police detective, as he and his partner attempt to track down a bizarre series of disappearances, and the brutal slaying of the young women. Director Greg Stechman is an original voice in the popular serial killer subgenre. In This Hollow Sacrament, his debut film, he drags you kicking and screaming into the depth of hell and doesn't let you up for air.

Not a whole lot out this week. I hear , however, that 'Philosophy of a Knife' is one of the best films of 2008. If you're going to try any of these out, I would definitely go for that one.

Classic '60's Zingers

Faster Pussycat Kill! Kill! (1965)

Directed By: Russ Meyer

Tagline: Superwomen! Belted, buckled and booted!

Russ Meyer is at it again with more grind house type sleaze. This time around he pays tribute to the beauty, power, intelligence, and violence inside women instead of just sexploiting them. When a person thinks about watching a Russ Meyer film, they usually expect to see TONS of boobs, gratuitous nudity, and silly sexcapades. None of that in here. 'Faster Pussycat' is about three thrill seeking go-go dancers racing their cars in the desert looking for the next big adrenaline rush. While at a gas station, they catch a tip that an old man living in the area has a fortune hidden somewhere on his land. These busty beauties unanimously agree to go to this man's house and rob him of everything he has. Arriving at the home, the girls realise this is going to be harder than they thought. The old man has two sons: One a blubbering muscle headed oaf and they other a cool, calm, and collected intelligent man. Through the use of their god given talents, their quick thinking, and violent nature, the women get what they want, but pay the ultimate price for it. 'Faster' is a great movie. The way Russ Meyer portrays these women is excellent, definitely a refreshing break from all of the dumb bimbo flesh films of the era. The casting was absolutely perfect. Tura Satana, Haji, and Lori Williams are all beautiful actresses and fit these roles amazingly. One complaint I have is the super slow speed chase toward the end of the movie. Everything else in this film is so quick and fast paced and this scene sort of kills the tension and is kind of a bore. Other than that, pretty women, original story, great acting, witty dialogue, silly one liners, and fast paced action(for the most part) make this film one not to be missed. It is a very hard to find film and can be very pricey. If you have the opportunity to rent it, please do. 'Faster Pussycat Kill! Kill!' gets an 8.5/10.

Gary A. Braunbeck

Not only is Gary A. Braunbeck a five time winner of the Bram Stoker Award but he is my new all time favorite author, surpassing Clive Barker. I just finished reading 'Far Dark Fields', one of his Cedar Hill Ohio novels accompanying such epic titles as 'Coffin County' and my favorite novel 'Mr.Hands'. 'Far Dark Fields' is a bout a high school English teacher who finds himself hallucinating and having weird dreams after a teenager goes on a shooting rampage. Why is he having these weird feelings? What connection does the shooting have to his past? Braunbeck reveals these secrets in a way only a master writer can do. He easily plays with peoples fears and reveals the deepest, darkest corners of human existence. Through his vivid imagery and stunning use of language, he creates his own unique world that draws you in and doesn't let go until every ounce of your sanity is drained. Gary A. Braunbeck has one of the most unique writing styles I have ever read. He goes to those places that while we are reading, we beg him not to go. I cannot stress enough how much every reader of this website needs to go out and pick up a copy of 'Mr.Hands' or any of Braunbeck's other astounding novels. i for one will not stop until I have read every one of his novels and short stories. Gary A. Braunbeck is truly the writer I wish i could be.

Alien Underwater?

Leviathan (1989)

Directed By: George P. Cosmatos

Tagline: Welcome to your worst nightmare, welcome to Leviathan

Before last night, I had never seen nor heard of this movie. However, all the while watching it, I felt like I recognized it. It might have something to do with this movie being a COMPLETE rip off of the 'Alien' franchise. 'Leviathan' starts out like this: A group of underwater miners/scientists are out looking for certain rocks and gems and stuff when they come across a wrecked soviet ship. They discover a chest on the ship and bring it back to their underwater base. There be some old soviet pirate vodka in that there chest. One of the crew members steals the drink and chugs it down with his busty crewmate. Little do they know, the vodka is spiked with some sort of genetic altering drug that turns the crew members into man fish creatures. Oh and did i mention the mutation starts with an eel like creature bursting out of thei chests? Yea. I feel like I've seen that done before. Oh and the divers wear big mech like suits while underwater searching for rocks.....thats just two of the many rip offs one can take from this movie. Taken for what it is though, 'Leviathan' is a decent movie. It has some creepy atmospheres, a feeling of dread throughout, and some great monster and gore effects. Also there are some decent names in this film including Peter Weller(Robocop), Richard Crenna(First Blood), Daniel Stern(C.H.U.D., Home Alone), Ernie Hudson(Ghostbusters), and Hector Elizondo(The Fan). Overall, 'Leviathan' is just OK. Nothing groundbreaking or original to be found here. If your browsing through the channels and see this one on TV, give it a shot. 'Leviathan' gets a 5/10.

Is It Real?

This picture was spotted over at Victor Crowley's Myspace page. It doesn't look like a lot of effort was put into it but if it's real, I will be sooooo excited. 'Hatchet' was one of my favorite films of 2006, so a sequel still being helmed by Adam Greene would be a welcome treat. Check out the teaser poster:

Some ok sounding stuff this week. If you pick any up, feel free to write your own review in the comments section of this article. Enjoy!

Hush Little Baby...

The Hills Run Red(2009)

Directed By: Dave Parker

Tagline: Tresspassers Will Be Slaughtered

Have you ever wanted to see a movie so bad that you would risk bodily harm and even death to yourself and those closest to you? Well the "hero" of 'The Hills Run Red' did. There is a slasher film from the '80's that was pulled from theaters for an unknown reason and this guy sets out to find out why. What was so awful about this film that it was yanked from theaters as soon as it was put in? Apparently CG blood was what the problem was. This film is loaded with it. I understand some tricky kills use CG blood but come on. There is a part in this film where a woman gets ripped in half. George Romero and Clive Barker(to name a couple) managed to rip someone apart without using CG and that was over 20 years ago! The use of CG gore effects in movies today really annoys me. It just shows laziness on the part of the filmmakers. Why would we want to risk doing another take when we can just CG in the good stuff? It doesn't look right and you can tell. 'Hatchet' didn't need computers for gore and that movie has some pretty nasty and creative kills in it. OK, enough ranting, back to the topic at hand. 'The Hills Run Red' is your typical slasher movie. Teens get lost. Teens show boobs. Teens get killed. The killer in this movie is phenomenal. Creepy mask? Check. Unstoppable Strength? Check. Sweet backstory? Check. Inbreeding? Check. Fans of the slasher genre will get a good kick out of this film with all of the poster art from other 1980's slashers thrown into the mix at random places in the movie. Overall, I had some fun with this film. The use of CG blood turned me off but other than that, a very solid movie. 'The Hills Run Red' gets a 6/10.
